November is National Sleep Comfort Month! While many focus on the comfort of pillows, mattress firmness and bedding linens, achieving a comfortable night’s sleep can be affected by greater factors like our stress, anxiety and oral health. For instance do you or a family member snore, grind teeth (also known as bruxism), or have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea?
Not only do these factors affect our sleep comfort, but they can affect our overall health and wellness.
Snoring can greatly disrupt the quality of sleep, resulting in excessive daytime sleepiness. Snoring can also disturb the sleep of those nearby, causing great frustration and placing a strain on relationships.
Snoring has been identified as a possible risk factor for hypertension, heart disease and stroke and can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a type of apnea that occurs when your throat muscles intermittently relax and block your airway during sleep. A noticeable sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring. (ref)
Complications of Sleep Apnea may include but are not be limited to: hypertension, stroke, heart disease, abnormal heart rhythm, right-sided heart failure, diabetes, and sleep deprivation.
If your partner or family member shows any of the above symptoms you should encourage them to have a full assessment. Please contact us at 847-729-6080. What better time than National Sleep Comfort Month to make this possible health concern a priority? Proper treatment will provide a significant improvement in your partner’s health and wellbeing and will no doubt improve the comfort of your night’s sleep too.
